Why Can’t We Just Enjoy Sonic Blitz?

A Frustrated Love Letter to the Fans Who Still Care About All of Sonic
It’s 2025. You’d think by now the Sonic the Hedgehog fandom would’ve learned to celebrate our differences, our favorites, and our little corners of this massive franchise. But somehow, every time something new drops—especially something that dares to acknowledge the full legacy of Sonic—we’re right back in the same fight.
This time, it’s over Sonic Blitz.
Yes, Sonic Blitz, the mobile card game that’s more than just a gacha grab or deck-building distraction. It’s a tribute. A digital celebration of everything Sonic—mainline, obscure, forgotten, comic-based, alternate universe, and animated alike. It’s the closest thing we’ve had in years to a unified Sonic multiverse, and for some reason… people hate that.
A Mobile Card Game That Dares to Acknowledge It All
Let’s not sugarcoat it: Sonic Blitz isn’t some AAA, cinematic mega-project. It’s a mobile game. It’s not going to change the world, redefine the genre, or replace the big console titles. But for those of us who’ve been begging for the Freedom Fighters to be acknowledged again—for the SatAM crew, the Underground siblings, the Archie and IDW darlings, the side characters and one-off cameos—it’s a miracle in disguise.
And you know what? At this point, we’ll take what we can get.
We’re not asking for a 3D open-world game starring Rotor and Nicole. We’re not demanding a million-dollar Netflix series about Elias Acorn or Geoffrey St. John. We’re just thrilled someone remembers them. That they still have a place in the greater Sonic tapestry. That maybe, just maybe, they meant something to more people than we thought.
The Problem Isn’t the Game—It’s the Gatekeeping
So why the backlash?
Why does every post, every trailer, every update to Sonic Blitz that includes someone like Sally Acorn or Manic from Sonic Underground spark endless arguments? Why is there always a wave of comments saying, “They’re not canon,” or “Nobody cares about these characters,” or “This isn’t real Sonic”?
What even is “real Sonic” anymore?
Because last I checked, this franchise has been through just about every tone, format, and continuity imaginable:
Post-apocalyptic rebellion? That’s SatAM.
Musical royal triplets with guitars? Sonic Underground.
Slice-of-life chaos? Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog.
Edgy alien war? Shadow the Hedgehog.
Interdimensional sci-fi? That’s Sonic X.
Comedic wrestling matches between Eggman robots? Sonic Boom.
Existential cosmic horror? Frontiers.
It’s all Sonic, why are fans so dead set on drawing lines in the sand?
This Fandom Should Be a Playground, Not a Warzone
The truth is, fans who grew up in different eras of Sonic just want to see their childhoods acknowledged. Whether that’s someone who got into Sonic through Genesis cartridges in the '90s, or through IDW comics, or through YouTube lore compilations—they’re all valid.
We’re not trying to overwrite anyone’s canon. We’re not trying to push out Tangle and Whisper or make Silver the new face of the brand. We’re just saying: this universe is big enough for everyone.
Let Sally swing her energy blades.Let Sonia rock her keyboard.Let Nicole interface with modern tech.Let Rotor be the tech guy again.Let every version of Sonic's world get a moment to breathe.
Why is that such a threat?
We’re Tired of Fighting Just to Be Remembered
It shouldn’t take a mobile card game for these characters to get a crumb of respect, but that’s where we’re at. And when Sonic Blitz finally gives us that—and does so with passion, attention to detail, and more reverence than SEGA’s given them in decades—it’s disheartening to see the same tired gatekeeping rear its head again.
To the fans who want everything sanitized and stripped down to “just the games”: That’s your preference, and that’s fine. But stop acting like wanting more than that is somehow an attack. We love Sonic, too. We just love all of Sonic.
Let People Be Happy
Here’s the bottom line: if Sonic Blitz makes someone smile because they saw Bunnie Rabbot in a slick new card animation, or finally pulled a 5-star Sonia with her Underground outfit—let them be happy. If it means a kid gets to learn who these characters are for the first time, even better.
If it’s not your thing, you don’t have to play. But don’t ruin it for those of us who’ve been waiting so long to feel seen.
Because at the end of the day, we’re all fans of a blue hedgehog who runs fast, fights for freedom, believes in friendship, and never gives up.
Maybe it’s time more of us remembered that.
